I would like to make the following points concerning your review of the Global Village Teleport Gold II (February 1995):
QuickFax — You can achieve this by printing from any application or, if you're not in an application, from the Finder by choosing 'Print Desktop' or 'Print Window.' Choose 'None' for pages to print and an appropriate cover sheet which has a memo field then type your message in the memo field provided. Your fax will then consist of the cover page with the contents of the memo field. This is in fact in the manual.
Software v.42 and v.42bis — I don't believe you mentioned the fact that the Gold II implements error correction and compression in software. I don't particularly like software v.42 and v.42bis. What happens if the modem is being used on a low-powered Mac such as an LC? Will data throughput take a hit? This may not be an issue now, but back in November '94, the Gold II was shipped with GlobalFax 2.1.3(?) which did not have error correction. That caused me alot of problems when I tried setting the modem up for a client. In the end, I had to settle for a line speed of 2400bps for the modem to be usable. Mind you, we're in Malaysia where telephone lines are pretty much unpredictable depeding on your location.
I was rather upset with Global Village at that time for releasing a modem without error correction, software or otherwise. However, they did send me an update (2.1.4) when it was available.

Thom Hogan, a product manager with Connectix Corporation, wrote us to clarify a few points in our QuickCam Review (February 1995):
  The QuickCam does not do "its own focus interpolation in software." There is no
need. The depth of field for the lens is sufficient to render anything from 18"
to infinity in reasonable focus. Applying post recording processing on an image
can render it sharper to the eye, but results in artifacts. The whole point of
doing a digital-only camera is to avoid artifacts of the digital-to-analog/analog-
to-digital process.
  The QuickCam serial connection transfers data to the computer at a very fast
2Mbps (megabits per second). By comparison, the very fastest modems you can
buy transfer data at about 56Kbps, or 1/40th the speed.
  The software does indeed keep preferences. The brightness level has always
been kept by the preferences. Beginning with 1.0.2 the full set of settable
items is kept (PICT/TIFF, etc.).
  QuickCam does indeed work on the LC. We have corrected our literature to
reflect that.
  Version 1.0.2 of our software (the current version), allows the camera to run
on all Quadra 605/Performa 475 variants, albeit at a somewhat slower frame
rate.
  The QuickCam does not drain the battery on a PowerBook when left plugged in. The
manual was written prior to the software being done, and we changed that aspect
shortly before shipping the product.
  The QuickCam DID ship prior to Christmas. In fact, it shipped on Halloween.
Unfortunately, we severely underestimated demand, and every unit we made
prior to the holiday was snapped up instantaneously.
